Building the organisation is the third layer in the B3 framework®. It sets out what’s needed for people come together effectively to deliver the work of the company.
The larger or more complex the business, the more there’s a need to focus on the building the organisation layer. Typically early stage businesses tend to under-invest in this layer, yet it’s a vital pre-requisite to effective scaling.
The four components of building the organisation
Putting in place the building blocks of a functioning organisation so that people collaborate effectively towards common goals.
Roles
The roles component describes the work needed as groups of clear accountabilities. This enables autonomy for people to do their best work while ensuring alignment to the company’s goals and the work of others.
The structure component explains how individuals and teams relate to each other in their work. It creates a tangible form for the organisation, providing a mental model for people to understand how they contribute.
The governance component sets out how an organisation takes a proportionate approach to ensuring it functions coherently, legally and with minimal friction to getting the work done.
The decision making component involves setting out how the organisation expects people to take decisions in their work. This increases agility and pace in the business while increasing team engagement.
